More than 4,000 checks were carried out by police between October 2020 and January 2021 to deter burglars. However, 450 break-in attempts and 400 successful burglaries have taken place in recent months in the Grand Duchy.

While the reported number has dropped by 200 cases compared to the same period in 2019, the number of break-in attempts has doubled. 34 suspected burglars have been arrested since October 2020. According to the police, criminals are now focusing on new targets: garages and cellars.

Police would like to remind residents that closing all windows and doors is vital during absence, even if only for a short period of time. A tilting window is an easy entry point. If windows are equipped with a lock, do not leave the key inside, as burglars can break the glass and then unlock the window from inside.

An alarm system is of great value too. Furthermore, burglars tend to avoid light, so lighting one's home will help discourage break-in attempts. Make sure to lock doors of garages and cellars, and secure bikes when locked away in a private cellar or shared garage.

Inform your neighbours

If you are away for several days, inform your neighbours so that they are aware of your absence in case they see something suspicious. If you are going on holiday, inform the police by filling in the "Going on holiday" form. The police will carry out occasional prevention patrols as part of their general surveillance, day or night, around your home.

Suspicious vehicles in a street or neighbourhood should also be reported to the police. While any report can be valuable, it is important that information about potential perpetrators or suspicious items is as accurate and complete as possible.
