The 44-year-old man was arrested in the Gare neighbourhood of Luxembourg City on Thursday evening. According to police, he was arrested because he was highly intoxicated and represented a threat to himself and others. He was brought to a sobering cell at the police station of Luxembourg City after a doctor checked on him and approved the transfer to the sobering cell.

When officers checked on the man shortly before 9pm, the 44-year-old did not show signs of life. Resuscitation attempts were unsuccessful. The man was proclaimed dead by a Samu emergency doctor.

The public prosecutor's office ordered an autopsy to be carried out. The general police inspectorate has taken over the investigation.
