Going organic5% of agricultural land dedicated to organic farming in Luxembourg

The "bio action plan" was launched a year ago and is slowly beginning to bear fruit, according to the Ministry of Agriculture.

The agricultural area set aside for planting organic products increased by seven percent between 2019 and 2020. Today, around five percent of the total area is set aside for organic cultivation.

Twelve farmers began restructuring their production towards organic last year, while two conventional suppliers are currently benefiting from an intensive consultation to help them in this reorientation. Romain Schneider, Minister of Agriculture, said that several projects are also currently underway as part of a recovery plan.

The aim of this plan is to promote organic products to consumers in the Grand Duchy.

A recent study shows that Luxembourgers spend around 12 percent of their food expenses on organic products. Schneider admitted it was taking time to get Luxembourgish organic produce on to supermarket shelves, saying the development still needed more time to mature.

The organic action plan developed by the ministry is ambitious, to say the least, foreseeing that around 20% of agricultural land will be dedicated to organic farming by 2025.
