Ministry for Home Affairs75% of municipal councillors are men

RTL Today
The average age of public servants on municipal councils has not changed in ten years, according to recent data published by the Ministry for Home Affairs.

The situation has not changed from a decade ago, with the average age for a councillor at 54, but Minister Taina Bofferding said local councillors benefit from a more diverse structure, thanks to the growing involvement of young people in municipal politics. On the other hand, there is still work to be done in terms of parity in municipal councils since just one in four representatives is a woman. 75 percent of advisers are men, a figure that still needs to evolve in order to achieve a certain balance.

The LSAP minister said she was well aware of the problem and hoped to encourage young people to share political responsibility at a municipal level, while promoting equality between women and men. Bofferding added that young people may still be influenced by representations of classic and often bygone roles.

The above figures formed part of Bofferding's response to a parliamentary question from Pirate MP Marc Goergen.
