The 2020 edition of the Statec report "Social cohesion and work" states that 24.3% of households had trouble making ends meet last year.

"More specifically, making ends meet is "somewhat difficult" for 14.4% of households, "difficult" for 6% and "very difficult" for 3.9%", the report explains. While high, these rates are in decline and have not been this low since 2011-12.

Obviously, not all residents are equal in their financial situation. Three out of ten single-parent familieswith one child are affected. For single-parent families with two children, 50% are struggling at the end of the month. This rate, too, has fallen, but there is still much work to be done.

27.5% of single adults face financial difficulty. This is matched by couples with one or more children. Couples without children are generally the most well off.

The housing situation also contributes to the capacity to make ends meet: among those who rent, two out of five households are affected, compared with less than one out of five home owners.
