The project has two objectives, to facilitate access to the capital using public transport, and to adapt the existing infrastructure in Senningerberg and the surrounding area.

In the coming years, the tram line will be extended out to Findel airport. A 4,000 space Park & Ride car park is also in the works, along with a new bus station.

At present, motorists in rush hour are slowed down by the access and exit ramps on the A1 at Senningerberg. To relieve the pressure on traffic, these ramps will be upgraded from two to four lanes, according to minister François Bausch.

Bausch explained this would also improve access to the Park & Ride, allowing visitors to make use of the car park and take the tram to the capital rather than adding to the ongoing traffic issues surrounding the city.

The additional ramps will allow direct access to motorists instead of taking a route through nearby residential areas.

The tram line construction is gradually coming to an end, said Bausch, as work is reaching the final stages of both major tram extensions at Cloche d'Or and Findel. The minister described it as a multimodal connection, not just concerning the tram, but integrating public and personal transport to allow it to flow smoothly.

The Senningerberg development is expected to cost around 3 million euros. The invitation to tender will be launched in the autumn. However, before the tram can reach Findel, operating company Luxtram must first launch a major project in Kirchberg.

Bausch explained the process was underway to build a connecting bridge from Kirchberg to the opposite side of the motorway to continue the tram line to the airport.
