Days after Deputy Prime Minister Etienne Schneider confirmed his retirement from politics, an opposition MP has also provided further details on stepping down from the Chamber of Deputies. ADR MP Gast Gibéryen specified that he already had an exact date in mind but he refrained from revealing it. The MP confirmed he would step down in 2022, which would be over a year before the next legislative elections. This would give him plenty of time to prepare for his departure from the political world, he explained.
He added that the Alternative Democratic Reform Party was well-structured, boasted many members, and that it was not a far right party. This would not change after his stepping down, he stressed.
"Everybody can be replaced, myself included," he told RTL on Friday morning. Gibéryen, who is the Chamber of Deputies' longest-serving MP, will be replaced by Fred Keup.
Regarding the controversial Facebook post of ADR politician Sylvie Mischel, Gibéryen said that this matter was closed. He nevertheless argued that this issue had been resolved quickly and that it had also triggered many positive reactions. He conceded that it had been unfortunate to make a point by using refugees. The party used the incident to remind members to be more careful in the future. With regards to Etienne Schneider's plan of stepping down, Bibéryen said that it would contribute to political disenchantment if the Minister of the Economy were to end his mandate only to switch to the private sector. This would contradict the values of the socialists, he concluded.
