The politician from the Luxembourg Socialist Workers’ Party (LSAP) wants to fulfil the goals his party set for the current legislative period. Thill was previously in charge of finances and thus knows what is expected of him: “There will be continuity rather than new ideas. A number of important projects are already underway.”
Said projects include a car park near the train station, a daycare for children, as well as a transition to a car-free town centre. Thill further noted: “Former Mayor Haagen played an important role and we are lucky to have an absolute majority in Diekirch. This allows us to advance projects more quickly and have fewer discussions on the council. I am not afraid and have enough experience to know how things get done.”
The biggest undertaking is of course the Nordstad fusion between five municipalities, including Diekirch. Despite the fact that the 2023 deadline is becoming less likely, Mayor Thill explained that progress is still being made: “I don’t think we will manage to hold a referendum prior to the next municipal elections. It is too much work to file a draft bill and inform residents about the proposed ideas. Nevertheless, we will initiate all procedures in due time so that everyone knows what is happening during the next legislative period.”
57-year-old Thill is a nurse-anaesthetist, but currently exempt from duties as head of the employee representation. The former handball player is also known to be a passionate skier.
