Every October, the town of Vianden transforms for its annual walnut market and attracts thousands of visitors with culinary specialities, lively atmosphere, and a tradition that goes back generations.

Vianden may be best known for its imposing medieval castle, winding narrow streets, and picturesque setting in the Our Valley, but every autumn, another star of the region takes centre stage: the walnut.

During the annual Vianden Walnut Market, the entire town is transformed into a bustling fair, with stalls and festivities revolving around this small but storied fruit.

Each year, around 12,000 people flock to Vianden to soak up the festive atmosphere and sample countless walnut-themed specialities. The event draws not just locals but also tourists from abroad.

Vianden Mayor François Weyrich notes that groups from Belgium and the Netherlands come to Vianden every year, travelling here by bus just to discover the region.

For the local municipality, however, the walnut market is far more than just a tourist attraction, it is an extremely important event for local clubs and businesses. "It is part of our identity", the mayor adds.

A tradition with deep roots

The bond between Vianden and walnuts runs deep, reaching back to the 19th century, when the area was renowned for its abundant walnut trees.

At that time, walnuts were a vital economic resource for local residents, who not only gathered them for their own use but also sold them or pressed them into walnut oil.

At the beginning of the last century, roughly 20% of all walnuts sold in Luxembourg came from the Vianden area.

The very first Vianden Walnut Market was organised in 1935, and over the decades, this once-local custom has grown into one of the country's best-known traditional markets.

From walnut liqueur to sausages

Today, a stroll through the market quickly reveals that walnuts offer far more than just the nut itself.

Dozens of stalls tempt visitors with a wide range of products: from traditional walnut schnapps and liqueurs, to walnut oil, cakes, pastries, and even sausages refined with walnut pieces.

Alongside the culinary delights, the communal spirit is a key part of what makes the event so special.

Walnuts are also recognised for their health benefits, as they are rich in unsaturated fatty acids, dietary fibre, and minerals. In particular, walnuts are a notable source of Omega-3 fatty acids.
