
The association has a number of recommendations to avoid unpleasant surprises.
ATM transaction fraud has started to make a regular appearance in the police bulletin and, according to the association, a number of banks recently reported cases of attempted fraud.
Crooks will, for example manipulate or hack ATMs, or distract their unsuspecting victim before stealing their cash. Luxembourg's Bankers' Association is ringing the financial alarm bells.
Among the association's recommendations: keep your distance from other people standing around ATMs. If someone you don't know steps to close or acts suspiciously, tell them to keep at distance. If they don't react accordingly, cancel the transaction and take off.
Don't engage in conversation. Also always check if the ATM looks like it could have been tampered with.
If the ATM does not return your card or cash, immediately block your card and contact police.
European law foresees reimbursements for payment services. Marc Hemmerling explains that the question of compensation also partly depends on the victim's bank.
The ABBL hope that clients become aware of the potential dangers and proceed with caution and common sense when they withdraw cash.
