Plans are taking shape for recently cleared land near Luxembourg City's central railway station.
MP Meris Šehović recently questioned Mobility and Public Works Minister Yuriko Backes about the site in Bonnevoie, immediately adjacent to the central station. In a parliamentary question, he noted that facilities alongside the railway tracks had been removed in recent weeks and asked what was planned for the land.
For the time being, the site will not be used for housing, offices, social infrastructure or public spaces. Backes explained that the project currently under consideration is primarily intended to "strengthen the station's multimodal infrastructure".
The plans include a new bus station on the CFL-owned land, as well as a station building with shops and services including secure bicycle parking.
At this stage, however, residential use is not permitted in the area. The minister said the possibility would nevertheless be examined as part of feasibility studies due to be carried out before the end of the year.
The studies will involve consultation between Luxembourg City services, the National Roads Administration, CFL, Luxtram, and the ministries of Culture and Mobility.
In the meantime, CFL will use the land to park its buses, even though a new depot designed for this purpose is currently being built in Bonnevoie. For now, the site intended to become the central station's "second façade" will therefore serve as a parking area.
No budget or timetable for the project has yet been set.
