Five-year overviewBulky waste analysis shows big drop in deposits since 2014

RTL Today
The environmental administration has carried out an analysis of bulky waste in the time period between 2014-2019, with the aim to estimate how much waste was generated and how it was composed.

Overall, bulky waste deposits decreased by 20-30% since 2014. 85% of weight fell into the categories of wood, upholstered furniture, mattresses and "optically indistinguishable waste", provided in sacks and boxes and therefore not clearly identifiable. 12% of waste is composed of children's toys.

For the study, random samples were taken in 22 different municipalities, which were sampled on the basis of population density, the frequency of collection and rates of bulky waste taxes.

The reduction in bulky waste could indicate an increase in the reuse of materials via furniture reuse organisations and second-hand stores, which are becoming increasingly popular.

Bulky waste in Luxembourg can be brought to recycling centres in communes. Bulky waste collection on demand is also possible, with a fee of €20 per collection (max 100kg, otherwise €0.20 per additional kg).
