LuxembourgBusiness hotels experience 60-80% losses due to coronavirus

The hotel sector is one of the most affected by the crisis, especially the establishments located around the capital which are reliant on business clients.

On average, two thirds of guests at these hotels are there for business purposes. However, virtually all such reservations were cancelled over recent months, said the owner of Hotel Christophe Colomb, located in rue d'Anvers.

Compared to 2019, the sector has accumulated losses of 60-80 percent this year, due to lockdown, travel bans and other coronavirus measures.

According to the secretary general of Horesca, François Koepp, owners of smaller hotels are struggling in cases where they do not own the premises.

Government financial aid and partial unemployment, although not negligible, would be necessary for many businesses to survive, while once short-time work ends, unemployment numbers in the sector are expected to shoot up. The hotel industry is prepared for prolonged difficulties, not expecting to return to 2019 levels for at least two to three years.

Luxembourg's classification as a high-risk territory has not helped matters, with fewer arrivals from abroad than ever before.
