According to recently published figures, out of 1,100 incidents recorded across the country's various networks, including the CFL, AVL, TICE, Luxtram and RGTR, the railway lines alone account for 655 cases of assault in 2025, targeting passengers and staff alike.
This year again, one line stands out for a particularly high number of problematic incidents, namely the Luxembourg-Esch-sur-Alzette-Rodange line. The Mobility Minister indicated as much in a parliamentary reply to Luxembourg Socialist Workers' Party (LSAP) MP Yves Cruchten, based on official records covering the period from 1 January to 25 June.
On that line, aggressive behaviour, insults and violence are markedly more frequent than on other major lines in the country. The CFL, for instance, records around half as many incidents on the Northern line, on the Luxembourg-Pétange connection via Bascharage-Sanem, or on the Luxembourg-Wasserbillig line.
The rail operator points out that a line is designated a "sensitive area" when at least three incidents are recorded within a two-month period, a threshold that is regularly crossed on the Luxembourg-Esch-Rodange line.
The reported incidents cover a wide spectrum, from inappropriate behaviour and endangering people or property to psychological or sexual harassment, physical assaults and verbal abuse. In 2024, insults made up the bulk of cases recorded on CFL lines, with 190 reports. Verbal threats came next at 24 complaints, followed by sexual harassment and physical assaults on 16 incidents each. That data had already been laid out by the minister in a parliamentary reply in June 2025.
The LSAP MP also wanted to know which station was the most exposed to violence. Unsurprisingly, Luxembourg's Gare station came out well ahead.
According to Minister Yuriko Backes, the number of incidents recorded there is between five and eight times higher than at other stations in the country, such as Bettembourg or Esch-sur-Alzette. This is a reflection of the Gare's central role as a multimodal hub, through which very large numbers of travellers and a wide range of users pass every day. That status makes it the main convergence point of the network, and one where surveillance has also been reinforced.
