The Young Farmers Association launched the public petition to put a stop on the export of live animals to countries that do not respect EU regulations and standards in the slaughtering process. The initiative thus demands that animals born here in the Grand Duchy no longer have to travel thousands of kilometres, only to be slaughtered in inhuman conditions upon arrival.
After the meeting, Minister of Agriculture, Viticulture and Rural Development Romain Schneider noted that the discussions were productive. Luc Emering, president of the farmers association, also agreed that progress was made. The introduction of a cattle passport is now on the table, which would help regulate and monitor the destination of live stock. The Young Farmers Association want to revise the proposed regulations until September.
Minister Schneider also provided insight into the respective statistics. In 2019, close to 200 animals were exported and slaughtered outside of the EU. However, that number drastically decreased to 20 in 2020, and currently stands at 0 for this year.
