After some heated exchanges between deputies from CSV, DP and Greens with ADR faction leader Fred Keup, 48 deputies voted in favor of amending the constitution. The five ADR deputies and DP deputy Gerard Schockmel voted no. Jeff Boonen and Paul Galles from CSV abstained. Four deputies who could not be there today were unable to vote because proxies are not allowed in votes on the constitution. These were Félix Eischen, Jean-Paul Schaaf and Michel Wolter from CSV and Pirate deputy Sven Clement.
A proposal by The Left to enshrine abortion as a right in the Constitution was revised to define it as a freedom instead. This formed part of a compromise with the Christian Social People’s Party. The aim is to safeguard women’s freedom to terminate a pregnancy in accordance with the law.
