Addiction Counselling Service 'Impuls'Consumption of pharmaceuticals among adolescents has increased during pandemic

RTL Today
Georges Lemmer, a psychologist and psychotherapist working for the addiction counselling service 'Impuls', was a guest on RTL Radio on Friday morning.

Prior to the pandemic, Impuls treated about 590 young people. While fewer people sought the help of the service during the pandemic, the number has recently started to increase again, according to Lemmer. Compared to the first three months in 2021, Impuls noticed a 25% increase in people seeking the help of the service, which targets young people between 13 and 21.

Young people are developing psychological issues ‘as a result of the current crises’

The psychologist explained that Impuls focuses on the treatment of patients struggling with substance abuse, such as cannabis, alcohol, or cigarettes.

The consumption of pharmaceuticals has also increased during the pandemic, as many young people are developing psychological issues as a result of the current crises. Lemmer also pointed out that especially during the early phases of the pandemic, many young people felt unfairly accused of throwing illegal parties and spreading the virus out of recklessness.

During the pandemic, many people spend “a lot of time” with their families, which has resulted in “tensions” for some, Lemmer explained. The increased stress led some young people to turn to substance abuse.

Services of ‘Péitrusshaus’ should be extended to young adults as well

Impuls is glad to have the emergency structure ‘Péitrusshaus’ as a first place of contact. However, Lemmer argues that it should be considered to extend the offer to young adults as well.

The psychotherapist explained that Impuls also works with structures in other countries to offer therapy. Lemmer stressed that in certain cases, it is important for young people to distance themselves from their everyday life and “reflect on their situation in a safe environment”. While abroad, Impuls remains in contact with the patients, their families in Luxembourg, and the medical professionals on site. Ahead of their return to Luxembourg, Impuls works alongside the patients to assess their school, work, and housing situation with them.
