Mentally handicappedCoronavirus: Difficult times for the mentally handicapped

RTL Today
For the Association for Parents of Mentally Handicapped Children, keeping the virus out of the homes remains the biggest challenge.

Over 200 people with a mental disability currently reside in flat-sharing communities that are supervised by the association.

These homes were hermetically secured throughout March, and families are no longer permitted to visit their children. It's an extreme situation that all have difficulties coping with.

On the front line are the educators, who spend each day with the mentally challenged. Social distance is impossible, they say.

Furthermore the educators are afraid they may bring the virus into an environment of these vulnerable people, where the average age is quite high. The oldest resident is 87 years old.

The association announced a COVID-19 coordinator that implements and handles all coronavirus measures.

All ateliers and day care structures are closed, respectively cancelled, including the Bettembourg Park, which is part of the association.

The coronavirus remains a huge challenge to all disablity organisations. The handicap sector was recently categorised as "secture à risque" (risk sector).
