Too early to tellCoronavirus 'may' have slight impact on 2020 mortality rate

RTL Today
Between January and July of 2019, Luxembourg had 2,474 deaths compared to 2,510 in 2020.

Before drawing any conclusions, it must be taken into account that the year 2020 has not yet come to an end and, rather pertinently, the "Luxembourg in Figures 2020" published by Statec only obtained the number of deaths until the end of June. The statistics for the month of July (331 deaths) have only now been made available.

1,946 deaths were counted between January and June of 2010, 2,229 deaths in 2018, 2,474 deaths in 2019 and 2,510 deaths in 2020.

While there are many variables involved in a higher death figure, for example an ageing population, the 112 deaths attributed to COVID-19 so far will inevitably play an important role in the overall number.

Certainly, an increase of 36 deaths for comparable timeframes between 2019 and 2020 would suggest an influence from coronavirus relates deaths but it cannot simply be determined that this is the definitive case.

Interestingly, if one compares the mortality figures with those of 2018 over the same period, the Grand Duchy had 2,562 deaths at the end of July.

This is 52 more deaths than in 2020.

Mortality has been evolving year to year and there are many reasons as to why figure fluctuates. Flu related deaths are one factor and in 2020 this may yet have a larger part to play as we enter Flu Season.

Though it appears that Luxembourg's mortality rates are increasing, until the final figures for 2020 are collated, the impact of COVID on deaths in Luxembourg is unknown.
