Almost exactly five years ago, Ana Lopes was murdered. The primary defendant in the trial was her then ex-boyfriend.

On the final day of the trial in November 2021, the defendant still claimed to be innocent. However, he was unable to convince the judges of his claims. His alibi that he was at his parents’ home during the night of the murder and only left the house briefly to walk the dog, was anything but airtight. After the defendant repeatedly contradicted himself, the representative of the public prosecutor’s office stated that “truth is easy to tell but if one tries to invent it, it becomes complicated”.

Now, the young man was found guilty of having murdered his then 25-year-old ex-girlfriend and mother of his child in January 2017. After the murder, he burned her body in a car across the French border. From the beginning, the evidence was not in the defendant’s favour. In Bonnevoie, where he attacked Ana Lopes, investigators had found zip ties that were also being used in the car repair shop where the defendant was working at the time. The same was true for a roll of adhesive tape that was found at the location where the car was set on fire.
