Since the 1990s, non-profit organisations Mouvement Ecologique and ProVelo have advocated for a bicycle path between the municipalities of Mersch and Mamer. However, only parts of this project have been implemented over the years. A cycling path now exists between Mersch and Schoenfels, but the rest of the stretch to Mamer still lacks secured cycling lanes.

As per annual tradition, the road between Mersch and Mamer was completely shut to motorised traffic on Sunday, thereby ensuring safe passage for cyclists of all ages. It was the 25th time that the stretch was reserved for non-motorised traffic and many people made use of the opportunity to cycle the 18-kilometre distance safely.

There are currently around 700 kilometres of cycle paths in Luxembourg. The government plans to increase this number to 1,100 kilometres in the near future.
