The EKABE dairy management told producers on Thursday morning that the facility, located near Junglinster, would not renew its current contract with the roughly 70 farmers in the cooperative. A closure, however, is not planned. A crisis meeting has been called for next Monday evening.
In practical terms, this means that from the start or middle of next year, no more Luxembourgish milk will be processed for the dairy's products. The milk would therefore have to be imported from abroad to be turned into cheese, cream and other products in Luxembourg.
Farmers were given purely economic reasons for the decision. EKABE has been a part of French multinational Lactalis since 1989. At present, around 70 Luxembourg farms supply the Eschweiler dairy with 50 million litres of milk a year.
