Schneider will officially leave his roles in government on 4 February, passing on the mantles of deputy Prime Minister, Minister for the Economy and Minister of Health.
The next step in his career has not yet been confirmed, but Luxembourg paper Le Quotidien reported Schneider was positioning himself to take over as the next director-general of the European Space Agency when the current director, Jan Wörner, steps down in 2021.
Schneider refrained from confirming the rumours when speaking to RTL, although he admitted he had been asked to take the position. He said he was considering it but felt there were many changes needed at the ESA before he could confirm.
German national Wörner's second mandate as director-general will end in summer 2021. The ESA groups together 22 countries, with a seat in Paris. A strategic partnership has been in place between the Luxembourg National Space Agency and the ESA since October.
