By 11 August, local authorities had recorded more than 95 tags, but they have yet to find the perpetrators. The mayor of Ettelbruck assumes that it could be the first two digits of the local postcode and an attempt by a gang to mark its territory.
There are no logos, slogans or motives behind these paintings, let alone a possible cause to defend or a message to pass on. Only a number is visible. Mainly affected are the Grand Rue and the station area, though the cities of Diekirch and Luxembourg have also spotted the same markings.
The perpetrators have targeted bus stops, trees, mailboxes, walls, floors and even windows. It is assumed the individual or group generally acts at night.
In the meantime, municipal employees have a hard time removing the spray paint of the night before.
Mayor Jean-Paul Schaaf understands that young people want to express their artistic side, but these tags are blatant vandalism, he says. The youth centre also offers activities for young people who wish to engage in art forms, he concludes.
