Self-employed artists and film crews are among those suffering from a lockdown-related recession.

The ministers for Cultural Affairs in the EU sat down to discuss the current developments in the sector, as the lockdown continues throughout the month of April. All parties agreed that a solution needed to be found that could guarantee the survival of those contributing to human culture for a living.

Luxembourgish minister Sam Tanson explained that it was essential for the cultural sector to be accommodated with "practical, quick, and flexible answers that correspond to the actual needs" of people facing difficulties due to the cancellation of all public events. Tanson furthermore emphasised the the key role that culture plays in all living democracies.

A series of measures has already been drafted, which will be formerly discussed in an upcoming meeting of the council in May. Among other things, this is going to affect the initiative "Europe créative".

Other important issues will be the fight against the spreading of fake news and the independence of journalistic integrity.
