The controversial Fage dossier is set to be closed after nearly four years of discussions and accusations. The dairy factory was supposed to be constructed in the industrial zone Wolser between Dudelange and Bettembourg.
According to RTL sources, discussions on the continuation of the project were still conducted by the Ministry of the Economy over the course of recent days, but turned out to be futile on Tuesday morning, as conveyed by minister Fayot himself.
The Greek investors decided to step back from the project after too much time had passed and the start of the construction was still held back by local environmental concerns. The project was set to cost around €280 million and create 300 jobs. Following the incident, two further potential investors decided to step back from the land.
Meanwhile, the 15 hectare real estate has already been sold back to the Luxembourgish government for the same amount of the initial transaction: €30 million.
Minister of the Economy Fayot expressed his regret over the affair in an official statement, noting that the project could have helped fuel the economy. He further stated that the administration would continue to enrich the national industry with foreign business, but technological and sustainable methods would play a part in the decision-making process. Fayot is set to make an official statement in the Chamber this afternoon.
