Eurostat recently published a study on the subject, comparing the number of deaths following violent assault in the European Union member states. Luxembourg has one of the lowest murder rates per resident.
The United Kingdom recorded the lowest assault-related death rate despite the ongoing media storm regarding knife crime, at just 0.1 per 100,000 residents compared to the Grand Duchy's rate at 0.5 per 100,000 inhabitants.
Luxembourg's rate is identical to France and Germany, falling just under the European average which is 0.6.
In Portugal (0.8) and Belgium (1.1) the rates are considerably higher, although some way behind the top three: Estonia (2.7), Lithuania (3.6) and Latvia (4.6).
Statistics indicate that although violent crime is not uncommon in Luxembourg, the situation is not as critical as in other member states.
On a more positive note, the number of deaths related to assault, and homicides, are in decline across the EU, as there has been no increase since 2002.

Also good to know: deaths related to law enforcement intervention, or war, have been excluded from the Eurostat study.
