Luxembourg's water management agency has dealt with 441 cases of water pollution in the last five years. Only last Monday fishermen in Echternach had reported dirty water coming from an industrial site.
In her response to a parliamentary question, Minister for the Environment Carole Dieschbourg said that half of the cases could be identified and traced back.
But what happens next? Jos Scheuer, president of the federation of recreational fishing, provides insight into the matter:
"These cases must be forwarded to the judiciary. But what happens after that? You don't hear anything anymore. That's bad, catastrophic at the least, for a country like Luxembourg."
The damage of pollution remains. Such as in Potaschberg, where in May a construction site polluted the Muhlenbach stream, which flowed into the Syre.
Claude Strotz from the federation explains that fauna living in the rivers literally choke in the polluted waters.
Especially in a time where levels of fish in Luxembourg's rivers and streams are low, more attention must be paid.
Fishermen are worried about the state of these rivers and streams, where dead fish occasionally drift up to the surface, as was the case in the river Alzette last year.
