Rail operator CFL announced at around 3.30am on Monday that a technical problem had affected the infrastructure on the line between Clervaux and Troisvierges.

As a result, all train services on this northern stretch were suspended. In order to ease congestion on the rest of the network, intercity (IC) express trains between Luxembourg City and Troisvierges were also cancelled.

Passengers travelling from Luxembourg City towards the north could still use regional express (RE) trains, which were currently running as far as Clervaux.

These trains serve all intermediate stations, including Pfaffenthal-Kirchberg, Dommeldange, Walferdange, Mersch, Ettelbruck, Michelau, Goebelsmuehle, Kautenbach, Wiltz, Drauffelt, and Clervaux, which was serving as the line’s temporary terminus.

To ensure onward travel, CFL arranged replacement buses to operate between Clervaux and Troisvierges, maintaining a connection between the two affected towns.

Maintenance teams from CFL were working on site to resolve the issue, and from around 10am train services between Clervaux and Troisvierges were gradually restored.

Express trains from Luxembourg City towards Gouvy are also once again in operation. However, CFL's website warns that passengers should still expect delays.

Delays and cancellations on other lines

CFL’s website also reported disruptions early on Monday morning on routes towards Rodange and Metz. While these issues have now been resolved, passengers may still face delays or cancelled services on these lines.

CFL attributed Monday morning's delays and service interruptions to vandalism. When contacted by RTL, the company explained that at around 4.30am, an oversized vehicle (convoi exceptionnel) had collided with the infrastructure of the tunnel on Rangwee in Luxembourg City.

Technical teams were sent to the scene to inspect for potential damage, as the bridge in question passes underneath the tracks south of Luxembourg-Gare. As a precaution, rail traffic was significantly restricted in the area during the assessment.

The lines most affected by these measures included Luxembourg – Esch-sur-Alzette – Rodange, Luxembourg – Thionville – Metz, and some of the so-called “through” trains connecting the north and south of the country, according to CFL.
