A fire broke out shortly after 3pm in a field near Weidendellt in Consdorf, in eastern Luxembourg, before spreading rapidly to a nearby section of pine forest.
Around 70 firefighters were deployed to battle the flames, with a high number of fire engines also sent to the scene. Emergency services set up a shuttle service to ensure a sufficient water supply in the area. Mullerthal, due to its topography, can often pose a challenge for fire fighters attempting to reach waterways.
The Grand Ducal Fire and Rescue Corps (CGDIS) confirmed at around 4.50pm that the fire was under control, although emergency services were to remain on the scene for some time to carry out post-extinguishing operations.
The extreme heat and drought are increasing the risk of forest fires not only in this country, but also in France and Germany. Several large vegetation fires have already broken out in southern France, forcing thousands of people to evacuate.
The risk of forest fires is also increasing in some regions in Germany. Drought and high temperatures are making the work of firefighters more difficult, leading authorities to issue calls for more modern technology and additional firefighting equipment.
Spain is currently battling deadly wildfires, which caused 12 fatalities and 1,500 people to be evacuated.
