The University Council, the university’s representative assembly, will elect a replacement for Ludger Wirtz tomorrow, Tuesday, during an extraordinary meeting. Majerus is standing in the election despite not being a member of the University Council himself as eligibility criteria only requiring that a candidate be nominated by existing council members.

In a public statement, Majerus has called for a reform of the university’s governance structure, arguing that staff should be given greater decision-making power. He believes this could be achieved in part through a change in working practices within the existing legal framework, though he has also called for a revision of the university law itself where necessary. He made similar arguments this past weekend in an open letter co-signed with legal expert and constitutional law specialist Luc Heuschling.

Ludger Wirtz stepped down from the Board of Governors last week, following an email he sent to the Luxemburger Wort in which he criticised its coverage of events at the university. Wirtz had also been a member of the steering committee overseeing an audit that the university intends to commission in the wake of press reports alleging harassment, irregularities in promotion and recruitment procedures, and conflicts of interest.
