According to the weather service of Luxembourg's agricultural administration, the duration of sunshine has been climbing in Luxembourg over the last years.

Climatologist Andrew Ferrone explained how clouds are formed on a sunny day, even if the skies are blue in the morning. The phenomenon occurs when the sun's radiation gradually heats up the land and, in turn, also the air just above the earth. This triggers movements in the atmosphere and the warm air starts to rise. The rising air consequently begins to form clouds.

This meteorological phenomenon can often be witnessed during summer - and is also the culprit behind summertime thunderstorms.

Luxembourg's weather service collects data from various weather stations around the clock. You can follow these stations at agrimeteo.lu.

At the weather stations, meteorologists measure how long and how strongly the sun shines . Over the last years, the weather stations have found that duration of sunshine is slowly increasing.

Photovoltaics could therefore be an option in the Grand Duchy in the near future. In case you were wondering, photovoltaics refers to the conversion of light into electricity. The most popular photovoltaic systems employ solar panels that can, for example, be mounted on rooftops. However, photovoltaics are less efficient on excessively hot summer days. As a rule of thumb, May and June are the ideal months to use similar systems to convert sunshine into electricity.
