Luxembourg has a total of 2,501 police officers at the moment. According to the director of the police's human resources department, Francis Lutgen, it is planned to recruit an additional 200 police officers over the next three years.
Lutgen stated that the police are in fact completely reinventing their recruitment process. The training course will for instance be reduced to two years, after it had previously been extended to three. He added that since the plan is to also recruit more new officers, the basic training would also have to be adapted.
While Lutgen dismissed concerns that this could lead to a decrease in the overall quality of the training provided to new recruits, he also admitted that guiding new officers was "a challenge". He argued that this is why the whole process also required the genuine effort of the more experienced officers.

Lutgen also stated that in his personal opinion, the criterion that someone must have the Luxembourgish nationality to join the police was overrated. According to Lutgen, it is a political decision whether an EU nationality would be sufficient.
On the other hand, however, Lutgen stressed that the language clause, i.e. that someone must be able to speak Luxembourgish, French, and German, was crucial.
