Two days after photos of the Markusberg tunnel were published, the roads administration communicated details on the initially worrisome cracks. While they are likely to worry motorists, the administration’s spokesman Ralph Di Marco reassures those cracks have existed for 18 years - just one year after the tunnel was opened in 2003.

Di Marco continued by explaining that the cracks are a result of a swelling zone in Markusberg. There is no danger to road users, he added, otherwise the tunnel would have been closed to traffic.

When asked about possible on-site analyses, the spokesperson assures that they are carried out twice a year. As far as the work is concerned, it is carried out ‘when necessary’ and mainly concerns the road itself. More elaborate work is only planned in the medium term, i.e. not for another few years, Di Marco added.
