Overall in the European Union only 28% of teachers are male. In terms of males in the teaching workforce, Luxembourg leads the way along with Denmark, with males representing 35% of teachers in 2017. On the other end of the scale are Latvia (13%), Lithuania (15%), and Bulgaria, Estonia, and Slovenia (all 17%).

The Eurostat data also show that Luxembourg's teachers are younger than the EU average. Only the UK and Malta have a lower proportion of teachers aged 50 and over.
Looking at primary teachers specifically, 16.6% of Luxembourg's teachers in this category are aged 25-29; this again is third only to the UK (21.7%) and Malta (21.3%), compared to an EU average of 9.3%.

Last month we reported that Luxembourg boasts the lowest number of pupils per teacher in primary schools, and the highest pay. Find out more through the link below.
