Alongside the Grand Duchy, France, Germany, Romania, Portugal and Spain are also preparing to accommodate the refugees.

However, Jean Asselborn criticised the fact that the engagement is voluntary, saying it is always the same European countries offering to take on the migrants, and always the same countries that refuse to help.

In the meantime, the EU Commission has also called for binding solutions to help refugees looking for shelter in Europe. A spokesperson in Brussels said it was unacceptable for people to be kept on a ship for days or indeed weeks.

The situation has shown once again that permanent and dependable solutions are required in order to guarantee that refugees can be safely and surely removed from on board vessels and given the help they need.

The refugees on the Open Arms rescue ship have spent the best part of two weeks on board the boast, which has been in the vicinity of the Italian island Lampedusa since Thursday.
