Every 4 years, members of the World Organization of the Scout Movement organise the Jamboree, a meet-up for Guides and Scouts from 164 countries.
Guides and Scouts – including 228 of Luxembourg’s own Scouts and Guides (FNEL & LGS) – will meet together in the Summit Bechtel Reserve.
Pit Demuth (LGS) and Guy Schubert (FNEL), the heads of Luxembourg’s Contingent Management Team for the Scouting in Luxembourg confederation are also travelling to the United States.
The Scouts and Guides within the Luxembourgish units are divided into four sub-camps: "Agra Fort", "Blenheim Palace", "Canadian Rockies" and "Fort Jesus". In addition, 20 Luxembourgers will participate in the Jamboree as IST-International Service Team members.
While part of the Luxembourg contingent – about 60 Scouts – will be returning home on 2 August, 160 others will remain in the United States to go to Richmond, Washington and New York. The program includes tours and a reception at the Luxembourg Embassy in Washington. Their return is scheduled for Saturday 10 August in Luxembourg City.
The Jamboree will be held on a camping site owned by the Boy Scouts of America.
The theme of this year’s Jamboree, bringing together Scout Associations from Canada, Mexico and the United States, is "Unlock A New World" and highlights values such as tolerance and solidarity.
The 25th World Jamboree will be held in South Korea in July 2023.
The first Jamboree (from the African: "peaceful meeting of all the tribes") was held in 1920 at the Olympia Arena in London (United Kingdom), where 34 countries were represented.
The last Jamboree in Europe dates from 2011: the 22nd jamboree which took place in Sweden, with 40,000 participants.
