Following the recall of some 50 products since January, the Luxembourg Veterinary and Food Administration (ALVA) has announced it will step up checks on powdered milk for infants. The move comes after several cases of contamination with the toxin cereulide prompted the authority to carry out 30 targeted inspections, one of which yielded a positive result.
As part of the reinforced controls, ALVA has collected and analysed 30 samples to date. One test reportedly came back positive, leading to the recall of the product in question. ALVA confirmed that further checks are ongoing.
The authority also stated that, so far, no cases of infants falling ill due to contaminated milk have been confirmed in Luxembourg.
In a related development, the responsible ministries have issued a warning against certain recommendations circulating on social media. They stressed that under no circumstances should cow, goat, or plant-based milks be used as substitutes for infant powdered milk.
