The tourists also sent a letter to Germany's Foreign Office and requested the authorities to evacuate the quarantined guests.

Hundreds of people were confined to the Tenerife hotel Tuesday after an Italian tourist was hospitalised and diagnosed with the coronavirus. Fourteen LuxairTours customers are quarantined at the hotel, the tour operator announced in a press conference earlier this week. Four Luxembourg nationals are among the guests. The tourists criticised that hygiene standards were poor at the hotel. Local authorities reportedly merely carried out tests for temperature and several guests have stopped taking precautionary measures seriously.

Luxembourger describes the situation at the hotel

A Luxembourger who is among the guests that were quarantined at the hotel took the situation calmly. In a phone call with RTL, Lucien Spellini explained that the guests were laying at the pool without face masks because they would not be able to get a tan otherwise. He also explained that free drinks were offered at the hotel. A key problem for Spellini himself is that he is required to take medication, which is difficult to obtain under quarantine.

Guests who have not displayed any symptoms have been allowed to leave the hotel building since Thursday to lay at the pool and eat together. They are, however, not authorised to leave the confines of the hotel resort.

According to the German doctors, the situation was tense and psychological support a must. They called on the German government to evacuate the tourists. This is easier said than done - the final decision lies with the Spanish authorities, who agreed on a mandatory 14-day quarantine period.

130 out of approximately 700 hotel guests were allowed to leave the confines of the hotel resort, German media reported. These tourists had only arrived after 24 February and therefore did not have any contact with the infected guests. The latter are currently at a hospital in Tenerife.
