The checks will focus on distractions at the wheel, with a view to raising awareness and reducing accidents on the roads.
In a press release, the police stated that distracted driving is one of the primary causes of accidents. Drivers who have developed the habit of texting or using apps while driving, thereby reducing their concentration, are particularly at risk.
The use of a mobile phone is strictly prohibited while driving, according to the Highway Code. Violating rules relating to the use of a phone while driving may result in fines, warnings and points withdrawal.
In 2020, 2,950 warnings were issued following the use of mobile phones or other devices while driving, according to the police.
In addition to the use of mobile phones, the police added that the following behaviours are sources of distraction: lighting cigarettes, using a satnav or other such applications, and even conversations using a hands-free kit. This applies to motorists, cyclists, and even pedestrians in some cases.
