The Young Socialists of Luxembourg (JSL) have announced in a press release that they have selected a new leadership team at their congress last weekend, with Mélissa Antunes de Magalhães (26) and Olivier Cano (27) taking over as co-presidents with more than 90% of the vote. Mehmed Kuč (30) was elected the organisation’s new Secretary-General, also with over 90% support.

Alongside the leadership changes, delegates unanimously adopted a resolution calling for stronger youth protection in the digital sphere. The JSL is advocating a ban on social media use for children under the age of 15, describing it as a preventive measure rather than a punitive one. The proposal is based on concerns about rising anxiety, depression, and addictive behaviour linked to unregulated platform use, and aligns with recommendations from Luxembourg’s Youth Office (OKAJU).

From the age of 15, access to social media should remain possible, but under stricter conditions, according to the resolution. It calls for tighter regulation of algorithms that promote addictive mechanisms, extreme content, or radicalisation, as well as mandatory youth-friendly platform versions with limited feeds and no personalised advertising. It also demands greater transparency from platform operators, in line with the EU’s Digital Services Act.

In parallel, the JSL are pushing for compulsory, high-quality digital education in schools, including media literacy, critical thinking around misinformation, understanding algorithms, and fostering healthy online habits. They argue that Luxembourg should take an active role at European level in shaping socially responsible digital policy.
