Most recently, the environmental protection organisation natur&ëmwelt put the project in question, criticising that it would cross national and European nature protection zones, as well as a flood plain. Instead, the Saar motorway should be used to relieve traffic in the area.
Minister François Bausch and Hesperange mayor Marc Lies refute these critiques, explaining that the air quality in the centre of Hesperange is currently so bad that the issue needs to be addressed. Currently, four overland options and one tunnel variant are being considered for the bypass.
There have been a number of impact studies, which will be presented along with the different bypass layouts at a citizens' assembly, to take place at the Celo in Hesperange on 1 July.
The definitive plans should be presented to the government by the end of the year, with the aim of passing the budget bill by the end of the current legislative period.
