Primary schools will be the first ones to reopen their doors on Tuesday, naturally all while respecting the new adapted sanitary measures: mandatory masks, social distancing, alternated breaks. These are only a few of the measures that might dampen the joy of being reunited with school mates.

More than 53,000 pupils will go back to primary school, followed by around 49,000 adolescent students in the coming days (17 and 18 September). The country's nurseries and childcare centres will also resume operations, with around 59,000 children to visit such a facility on the first day.

Some 10,000 teachers are thereby also going back to work, female staff members still make up the majority in the country: 80.9% in primary education and 52.4% in secondary education.

"A safe return"

The police announced on Friday that extra patrols around school buildings would be increased to ensure a minimum of traffic infringements on the day most children return.

Officers will focus on proper stationing, the use of phones behind the wheel, as well as the wearing of seatbelts. Police cars are further labelled with stickers reminding drivers to be extremely careful around schools.

The ministry of education is thus hopeful that every potential step was put in place to make the return to schools as safe as possible.
