According to Daniela Noesen, the director of the Federation for Organic Farming, the Grand Duchy's current agricultural policy has failed.
On the other hand, Christian Wester, who was recently elected as the new president of the country's Farmers Association, thinks that Luxembourg's farmers have been the victims of their own success.
Wester stressed that local farmers have managed to provide Luxembourg's population with quality food, which should not be exclusively organic.
Wester stated that farmers have to be able to make a living from their profession.
Meanwhile, Noesen criticised the current subsidies system, stating that as long as subsidies are tied to surface area, the system as whole is not expedient. A better solution would be to promote labour first.
Wester, on the other hand, demands planning security. A certain sales market must also be guaranteed, the president of the Farmers Association stated, adding that the national targets of 5 to 20% organic farming are "unrealistic".
The director of the Federation for Organic Farming nevertheless thinks that the demand for organic products is there, with Noesen stating that she welcomes the targets set by the government.
However, all the government can do is set the right conditions, the rest is up to society as a whole, Noesen added.
