The Chamber of Commerce has published a new brochure on the topic.
These days, a business does not need to make material products to have capital, as intangible capital is on the rise. Examples are companies such as Uber, a transport business without its own vehicles; Facebook, an online business that does not produce its own content; or Airbnb, a holiday rental company without its own properties, but worth more than Marriott or Hyatt on the stock exchange.
Carlo Thelen, director of the Chamber of Commerce, said businesses with intellectual capital are becoming more important. The new brochure, titled Actifs immatériels an d'Propriété intellectuelle, is to act as a sort of toolbox for businesses, answering questions such as how to protect one's business ideas.
In Luxembourg, businesses with intellectual capital carry more weight than elsewhere in Europe, responsible for 45% of the GDP and around 89,000 jobs.
