The tram extension to Cloche d'Or is expected to be finished by autumn 2023, creating a new multimodal exchange. The building works on a P&R car park beside the new national stadium have already started. The idea is to add parking spaces on the periphery of Luxembourg City in order to reduce traffic in the city centre.
The car park on Cloche d'Or will have 2000 parking spaces and serve a double purpose. First as a standard P&R for the south east, with a fast tram connection into the city centre and Kirchberg. Secondly for events at the stadium itself, when public transport is not an option.
The P&R is part of the Tram project. The tram line is entirely financed by the State, but the car park is largely paid for by the City, which will also be managing it. The total costs amount to 74 million Euro. In addition to the tram and car park, there will be a number of AVL and RGTR buses departing from the exchange.
„It will be a real Pôle d'Echange, just like some of the others currently being built. It will be attractive, with food offers or even entertainment options while people wait. There should be a certain quality to it", says the Minister of Mobility, François Bausch.
While this building site has just begun, another is coming to an end. The P&R by the Pôle d'Echange Kirchberg is expected to open on 1 May. The majority of parking spaces are being rented out to companies in the area, with around 300 spaces available to the public. The car park will be managed by a private company.
"That particular P&R is quite different from the one on Cloche d'Or or the one on Findel, which are classic P&Rs situated outside the city. This one is not really intended for long term parking. It is more of an in between, also meant to support rising local commerce in the Kirchberg quarter," François Bausch explains.
Another temporary car park for 600 cars beside the P&R should be finished by the end of March. The site surrounding the LuxExpo is also slated for major transformation to create more retail and residential space.
