The President-elect of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has been holding talks since Monday with candidates nominated for the formation of her 27-member commission. On Wednesday morning, Luxembourgish candidate Schmit had his second meeting with von der Leyen regarding the post of commissioner.
The socialist politician told RTL the discussion had been both friendly and positive. The former Minister for Employment is confident the Luxembourg government's vote will be taken into consideration, saying he expected to be a part of it.
However he did not wish to speculate on future responsibilities within the Commission as the new president takes up the mantle of a difficult role.
The full composition of the European Commission is expected to be announced in around ten days, said Schmit. At the end of September, the new team will be subjected to questioning by the European Parliament in order for voting to take place in Strasbourg.
The official appointment of the new Commission will take place at the European Council in October.
