The DP MP Max Hahn posed a parliamentary question concerning the potential installation of solar panels on the Haute-Sûre lake.

He stated the advantages of solar panels on the water would be numerous. Production would be more efficient as the water would naturally cool the structures. The panels would stop the water from evaporating in the reservoirs and would not take up additional space on the ground.

The MP also added that the lake would offer a suitable area between Lultzhausen and the dam for the panel installation.

Negative response from ministers

Claude Turmes (Energie) and Carole Dieschbourg (Environment) both agreed the idea was not feasible for multiple reasons, primarily the lack of compatibility with the law which stipulates any installation that would disturb a body of water is forbidden.

Any structures, works or activities surrounding the lake are subject to strict controls and require validation.

The water level would equally pose difficulties. Floating panels could represent a danger to the ecosystem, according to ministers. Checks would also be required to ensure the panels would not block the oxygen supply used by underwater life.

The government suggested proposing other artificial aquatic surfaces which would pose less damage to the water.
