Serge Legil, director of the prison administration explained that no new infections could be linked to the use of the non-conforming masks from a Chinese distributor. Only 28 such models had been used, meaning that the remaining stock of 2,372 masks will be destroyed and replaced. Masks are currently only used out of precaution within the facility, since there are no positive cases among inmates or staff members.
There has in fact been no confirmed case of Covid-19 inside the Schrassig facility to date, according to Legil. All necessary measures were put into place immediately at the beginning of the lockdown. For instance, all new inmates get tested and put in solitary confinement upon arriving, even if the results are negative. After a week, a second test is performed, a negative result meaning that the prisoner will be transferred to the general population.
During the lockdown, visits were moreover prohibited to reduce the risks of outside infections entering the facility. This measure ended in June however, meaning that visitors are allowed back under safety regulations.
