According to data from The World Bank, Luxembourg had 117.4 cash points per 100,000 adults in 2018 - just below our German neighbours at 118.22, but well above France (98.3) and Belgium (87.45). The world-wide average stood at 41.64.

The available data begins in 2004, at which point Luxembourg had 106.64 cash points per 100,000 adults - and the lowest number registered in the Grand Duchy was in 2013, at 97.86.

The 2018 number puts us in 17th place world-wide in terms of cash point density per capita, but far behind the top-ranking locations. Macao SAR (China) clocked 324.6, followed by South Korea at 272.82, and Canada at 220.6.

Cashless societies

An interesting contrast is found in Sweden. The country's official website, Sweden.se, notes that "cash is no longer king" in Sweden, and notes that cash payments in the country decreased by 25% between 2016 and 2018. In fact, half of Sweden's retailers have been reported as predicting that they will stop accepting cash by 2025.

It's perhaps no surprise, then, that while Luxembourg saw a 9.4% increase in the number of cash points per capita between 2004 and 2017, Sweden saw a decline of 12%. That's also despite them starting at a much lower number - going from 36.47 in 2004, to 32 in 2017. In other words, Luxembourg has 3.6 times as many cash points per capita as does Sweden.

Your five cents

This rather raises the question, which country do you think is going in the right direction? Are you in favour of more cash payments, or moving toward a cashless society?
